Damp Proofing Ideas for Your Home

More homes need damp proofing because of weather changes, increasing flood risk and prolonged periods of damp. Damp can cause extensive damage to the home, including crumbling plaster. If left untreated, it can lead to serious health problems and costly repairs. First, identify the source of damp.

If you notice dampness in your home as evidenced by patches of water on the ceilings or walls, you might need to investigate.

  • Gutters, down-pipes and roofing issues
  • Overgrowth or roots can be planted
  • Condensation
  • Rainwater entry
  • Poorly sealed windows and doors
  • Insulation of Cavity walls

Simply put, damp is caused by water getting in or not escaping.

Proper ventilation is your best option to tackle condensation. This is particularly common in large households, where many people shower and cook at different times. Condensation issues can be solved by keeping a check on mould behind furniture and around windowsills.

Penetrating damp is another common problem, especially when we have more frequent heavy rains. The first step in solving the problem is to find the source. However, it’s often possible to fix the problem by checking the gutters and pipes for any defects or poor design. Also check for overgrowth of vegetation or moss. If it is difficult to find the problem and there is no traceable damp course, then damp-proofing is usually the solution.

This is only the first step. The next step is to choose the right course of action from a number of candidates. Before you make the leap, it is strongly advised to consult an expert. However, there are many options:

  • Tanking slurries for damp-proof brick walls
  • Membranes that are water-proof
  • Special damp proofing paints

Tanking Slurries

Applying a tanking solution involves removing the mortar and applying a waterproof coating. This solution is best suited for basements as it can withstand high water pressures.

Damp-proof Membranes

HDPE is a high density polyethylene (HDPE) that can be used to make damp proof membranes. This substance is impervious both to moisture and salts. After you have addressed the source of dampness, a membrane can be used to create a space for moisture to escape from the wall.

Paints that are water proof

These paints can be applied to the substrate, then rendered or plastered. This provides a more effective layer of dampproofing and prevents moisture problems than simply applying plaster on top.

Re-plastering areas that have been affected by damp is often required.
